Recreational Threats to coral reefs

- Control your buoyancy so that you do not sink down onto
the reef and damage the coral.
- Adjust your weighting to attain neutral buoyancy before you descend to
the reef. Practice buoyancy control away from the reef until you are confident
in your ability to remain neutrally buoyant in the water.
- Be careful where you kick your fins.
- Be aware of those parts of your diving gear that protrude and can cause
damage to corals.
- Be aware that the reef is a delicate ecosystem and that each plant and
animal has a role to play in the health of the reef.
- Touch any organism that you wish to touch which will not harm or damage
them and which are safe to touch if it will help you learn about them.
Be aware of those organisms that are dangerous to touch.
- Report divers who persistently damage the reef or collect souvenirs, or
explain diplomatically to them why such behaviour is unacceptable.
- Make the most of your experiences in visiting a coral reef, and enjoy exploring
a world that is still visited by a privileged few.
